Well, I figured out how to scan this in for you all. I know, it's a little crooked; just tilt your head.
I planted broccoli & pepper seeds to start in the house today; I did my tomato seeds a few days ago. It's a little late but I was waiting for new seeds that I'd ordered. Every spring I just can't wait to start planning my garden and being able to finally get outside. Uncle Doug trimmed all the raspberry canes from last year last week; we have to do the old asparagus yet too and uncover the strawbery plants soon. YUM, fresh picked strawberries,raspberries, asparagus, beans, tomatoes, broc, cucumbers, peppers, squashes; I can't wait! The chickens got let outside today for the first time this spring. They are very excited because it's very nasty in the chicken coop after all winter. . . and cleaning the chicken coop is another upcoming fun job. Any volunteers to help? I could share alittle of that lovely ckicken poop with you (if there's any fellow gardeners out there). It sure makes the garden grow better (if you let it age for a year first, it's very hot).
On that note I'll get going. :-)
Love you all, A. Rachel

What a cute couple! Mark :)
Aunt Rachel!
So nice to hear from you. Once again I would love to learn from your extensive knowledge. Last year I had a small garden and I loved it. This year I am going to a larger garden. I really want strawberries and raspberries along with beans, pepper, cucumbers, ect. Do I need to start them inside like you did or can I wait until I get it outside? Also, last year my bean and cucumber got eaten before they grew. How can I prevent that? Let me know! Thanks!
Hi Jen;
Ok, this is the second time; I typed a whole thing out for you and for some reason it doesn't take - just disappears. Strawberries & raspberries you need to get plants from somewhere/someone; pay attention to what kind though. Rasp. are very aggressive and tend to spread wherever they can. I constantly battle w/ mine to stay in their raised bed. Beans & cucs do better if you sow them by seed in the ground when its warm. Peppers, tom, broc can be started indoors or purchased as plants. What are your plants (bug or animal)? That kind of determines the plan of action.
Love you jen,
A. Rachel
Aunt Rachel, I am so sorry that I will not be able to make it to the chicken coop mucking and boy do I know what a job that is. Slime is the only word that comes to my mind. Have fun! Maybe I'll be able to make it some other time! :)
Aunt Rachel! Good to hear from you - I was excited to read your info back to Jen as I too am starting a garden this year. My very first one and I'm just a wee bit excited! =) I'm starting out small, as I was told for the first time that's the way to go, and maybe next year I'll expand. I thought maybe tom, cuc, strawberries, pepper, and beans. Thanks for the info..love ya! Kim
Aunt Rachel,
Thanks for the input! I believe it was rabbits or maybe squirrels that ate my plants. I didn't have any chicken wire around them or anything so they were essentially free game! What would you recommend. How would I control raspberry plants from growing out of control? I am moving my garden to a permanent location that is larger. It will have my large fence around three sides so maybe I need to put the chicken wire along the front? Can I just buy raspberry plants from the store?!?! Sorry... so new and ignorant!
Hi Jen;
I'm sorry it's taken me so long to answer; I hope you get this. Before we put up a 6 ft. high chicken wire fence to keep out the deer, etc. I used dog hair that I got from the doggie salons and sprinkled that around the plants. It did help but it has to be redone after it rains. You can buy rasp. plants online or get them from someone who has some to share (thin out). I think you get better quality than buying them at Meijer or something. I'm not an expert on controlling them. I just keep chopping at the new runners. I've thought about talking w/ DeLangs over at DeLange's redberry patch & asking them what they do. They have grass between their rows so maybe they just mow new runners down w/ the grass.
Hope this helps, it's so nice talking w/ fellow gardening lovers.
Have fun,
Aunt Rachel
